Every now and then, I find it fun to change things

Every now and then, I find it fun to change things up and swap my curls for straight hair, but I’m always afraid of frying my hair. Here are 3 things I do to minimize heat damage and retain my curls when heat styling:

1 - Cleanse: I always start with clean hair and scalp. Residue from products left on my hair risk not only leaving my blowout results a little lacklustre, but also risk overheating and, as a result, burning my hair. And a squeaky clean scalp helps my blowouts last longer because that excess oil and product residue wears my hair down prematurely, and makes it look dirtier, faster.

2 - Moisturize and condition: Because heat styling can strip my hair of moisture, I make sure I cleanse with a moisturizing shampoo, and nourish my curls with a hydrating conditioner. For me, the thicker, the better!

3 - Take my time: This is not the time to rush things! It’s tempting to want to turn up the heat and go as quickly as possible, but low heat and gentle care are key! I turn my blowdryer to a low-medium heat setting, making sure not to spend too much time with the nozzle concentrated on one spot. This avoids overheating (and burning) my hair. I also take time with the curling iron, which I use to smooth out my hair. Slow, steady strokes on a low heat setting are key to me.

The result? This smooth, flowy wavy look!
